Welcome
to Coleshill, Warwickshire, UK
 |
Coleshill is the main town in the
western part of North Warwickshire. An ancient ridge town, lying on the rivers
Cole and Blythe and surrounded by countryside,
it retains its original character
in a steep main street
with many interesting and exclusive shops and features.
The town’s skyline, particularly the spire of Coleshill Parish Church, can be seen for miles around.
|
|
The town
has been settled since Ancient
Britain times, and artifacts still turn up in modern gardens from an important
Roman Site excavated in the 1980s. It was a major medieval centre as an
important staging post, on the London - Coventry - Chester - Holyhead route, in
the age of turnpike roads and horse-drawn coaches. These have been replaced by
modern transport links, with the M6, M42, Birmingham Airport, and the Channel
Tunnel freight terminal all within 20 minutes drive.

 |
The
historic coaching inns are now supplemented with restaurants, coffee shops and
hotels, providing a wide variety of food, drink and places of accommodation.
Instead of serving travellers changing horses, they now cater for people from
all over the world visiting the nearby National Exhibition Centre as well as for
tourists. The soaring tower and spire of Coleshill’s Parish Church of St Peter
and St Paul is a well-known local landmark. On a commanding site with a long
Christian history, the current church is in the beautiful decorated style of the
14th and 15th centuries. Several interesting memorials, including the famous ‘six
fingered hand’ brass, and a massive 12th century carved Norman font can be
seen inside. Coleshill School dates back to 1520 and is one of the oldest
schools in the country.
|
| Nearby, on Church Hill, you can still
see the town Stocks which are unique in Warwickshire because they also combine a
pillory and whipping post. These now stand outside the recently refurbished Old
Market Hall which houses an exhibition of Coleshill past and present and is
headquarters of the ‘Coleshill Civic Society’, one of many community groups
such as the Town Band, the Local Drama Group, charity fundraisers, the Scouts...
which provide a continual series of local events.
Leisure facilities are numerous,
including well-equipped tennis, rugby, football and cricket clubs, the Leisure
Centre Complex (the largest of its kind in the borough), several nearby golf
courses including the Belfry National Golf Centre (Ryder Cup
venue), fishing in
the rivers, and walking in the surrounding countryside.
Coleshill has been ‘twinned’ with
Chassieu in France since 1982 and enjoys a very close relationship with many of
it’s people. Close links have also been formed with Usingen in Germany over
recent times, with many visits both ways.
Although retaining its history and
traditions, Coleshill is very much a town of the present and has hosted it’s
own web site since 1999. This is an extensive site providing not only tourist
and visitor information but also acting as a forum for the Town and thriving Business community
